How To Make Computer Faster

With Additional Random Access Memory – RAM

The hard disk data storage is a large “fixed” memory storage unit that contains the majority of our information, records, documents, pictures, videos, etc. It is almost never added onto or increased. As mentioned earlier, if the hard drive is getting too full we usually remove some large items to open up space. There are other options such as diverting storage to removable storage.

But our slow computer problems don’t usually stem from the hard drive. The working memory or RAM however can be the issue when a computer is too slow. It is easy to understand that computers are needing more and more working memory capacity or RAM. It is used by the pc’s processor to place bits of information that will be need quickly and often. how to make computer fasterWithout enough of the storage room the processor will have to go into the Hard Drive memory into an area called the Virtual Memory. This is slower than the RAM and slow the operations down. Simply put, plenty of RAM will make a pc run faster.

Cards of RAM (shown above) can be removed, replaced, and new or larger capacity ones installed. And the process is not very hard. Your computer’s operating system uses a high percentage of this memory just to run.

To find out how much RAM your computer has follow this path: Click on the “Start” button and find “Control Panel”. Inside Control Panel locate and double click “System”. The pop-up screen will have “Memory (RAM)” with the size numbers out beside it. With the operating system using so much itself let’s compare each of them.

Window 7 OS uses about 1GB (gigabyte) of RAM and most recommendations are to have at a minimum twice the amount the operating system requires, so that is 2GB. Vista uses 512MB (megabyte) so your pc should have at least 1GB of RAM. And XP requires 256MB so it should have 512MB. You can see how much more computers are required to have today and higher functions (especially gaming) will need 2 or more times these amounts to make pc faster still.

We encourage you go on and test for computer errors with a free scan. It will only take a few minutes and the scan does not cost anything. Just click Fix My Computer to start it.

Adding RAM to a pc is not expensive, especially if you do it yourself. Almost any increase will give you faster computer performance. It is just better to have plenty and make sure this is not adding to you slow computer problems. The only computers that don’t come with enough RAM for normal use are inexpensive discount store models and maybe some that were ordered online where the buyer can choose the amount of RAM themselves. But almost always adding extra RAM will make faster computers.

Adding RAM At Home For A Faster PC

Below you can see a picture of a Random Access Memory card in one picture and in the second one it shows where the cards are located in the Mother Board of a regular desk top computer.

The side of the case or the whole shell can easily be removed usually by removing a couple of screws on the back and sliding back or pulling it up. (Always have the computer turned off and the power cord unplugged! More pc safety Here) These circuit boards can then easily be removed by pulling them gently away from the main or mother board. You should also use a clean cloth to touch them with so you don’t get oil from you hands or any other contaminate on them. They are durable though and you shouldn’t damage them if you are careful.

By removing one of these you can be sure to order or buy the correct replacement or additional card. After the new one has been installed and the side placed back on you simply start your pc again. It should automatically find and use the new memory. You may want to go back through the earlier procedure to see how much RAM your computer has now.
